Football & A Marching Band

This past Friday evening (8/26/11) I did something I had not done for over 10 years. I went to a high school football game. It was at Central High School and featured our Eagles vs. the Burke Bulldogs. Burke was ranked second in the state coming into the game and it was supposed to be over before it started. Burke has several Midwestern beef and corn eating young men that tip the scales near and over the 300 pound mark.

I was very nervous before the game, just as I had been when I was back in high school and taking the field of battle. In high school, the butterflies didn’t stop until that first hard hit was over. Friday night, I wasn’t sure when the butterflies would stop. I was nervous for the football team and I was nervous for my daughter. Friday night was her introduction to a real, there are people in the stands, marching band performance.

She and the rest of the marching band had spent many hours marching, sweating and working hard on becoming a band the previous couple of months. Now it was showtime and time for them to put on their performance. They weren’t wearing their marching band uniforms. They were wearing khaki shorts and their purple band t-shirts due to the potential heat. I thought they looked sharp. Of course there is room for improvement and I know they will.

The football game was pretty exciting and aggravating as well. Central had their chances to win the game, but too many interceptions (3) and a fumble at Burke’s 5 yard line were costly. Final score: Burke 14, Central 7. I look forward to the next home game in a couple of weeks.

The next day, Saturday the 27th saw the band perform in a local parade.

Dundee Day Parade

It was the annual Dundee Day Parade. This was the 50th time this parade has been held. The Central Marching Band led off the parade. My wife and I have been taking photos for the band this year and we both were snapping away on Saturday morning. I took one side of the street and she had the opposite side. I think we both got a decent amount of exercise while photographing the band.

We would get in front of the band and capture several images until the band had passed us. Then, with backpacks strapped on and cameras mounted on monopods, we would sprint like Olympians until we were once again in front of the band and start the process again. Everything was great for the first part of the parade. Then the crowd started getting denser and the parade path headed uphill.

Dundee Day Parade

Dashing through the crowd and up the hill made for a few harrowing moments and many near collisions. I am pleased to report that no one was injured.  The band sounded great and many Central alumni and band parents lined the parade route and cheered as the band passed by. It was an enjoyable way to see a parade and I look forward to more performances.

Until next time,

Mark

I guess I’m getting old…

For those that have a few years of life experience under their belt; do you remember back in your teens when you thought anyone over the age of 30 was old? When you were younger, do you ever remember thinking about getting old and what your life would be like in 20 years or 10 years or 5 years or even in 1 year? More and more I am finding myself thinking about the future and where I will be in any given number of years. I am not singularly focused on the future, but I have my moments when I know I am getting older and life is changing.

This past Monday, my daughter started high school. I swear on a stack of Bible’s that she was just entering Kindergarten a year or two ago. My little towheaded, inquisitive, intelligent little girl is now a young lady that is truly starting to forge her own way in life. Too rapidly, I might add, for her Daddy. She has made so many new friends this Summer that I can’t keep them all straight. Maybe I have early onset of Dementia or Alzheimer’s. I guess I am getting old.

Her mother and I no longer get to monopolize her time. I know we are still important to her, but we frequently take a backseat to activities, clubs, friends, etc. I really don’t want it any other way. My little Eagle needs to go and practice her flying. She needs to find other juvenile birds that are also spreading their wings in the daily pursuit of discovery and forge bonds with them. However, I am not ready for her to leave the nest and probably never will.

Seeing her all dressed up, excited and ready to attack high school made me sad and happy at the same time. As her Dad, I hope I have done all I can to prepare her for the trials and tribulations she will face. I hope I have shared enough of my experiences and knowledge with her so she is as able to address the hard choices she will face in life and think before making her decisions.

I used to be a great athlete. I still feel I can hold my own, but I am not the young, virile and headstrong buck I once was. I am a student of various martial arts and a fan of the UFC. I once was able to drop into a hurdler’s stretch with ease or contort my body into any number of positions, perform kata’s with ease and spar without being sore and beat up feeling for days after. Those days are pretty much over and I now occasionally get caught in various choke holds I have taught my daughter when “fighting” with her. I guess I am getting old.

I recently shared a few stories with a buddy of mine about experiences I have had and witnessed pertaining to martial arts training and a few UFC level fighters at various gyms around Omaha. He looked at me and said something like, “You work out and are a martial arts practitioner?”. The look was like one you would give an old, wrinkly and overweight woman who proclaims she was Miss America 40 years ago. She really was Miss America, but you just can’t reconcile that with the person you are staring at. It just doesn’t add up. Based on his remark, I guess I am getting old.

There honestly is no guessing… I know I am getting old.

Until next time,

Mark

Omaha Real Estate Photography Examples

I have received several inquiries from Realtors and home sellers in Omaha needing someone to shoot home images for them. A few have retained me to do work for them. Too many have been apprehensive to take me at my word that I am definitely capable of doing the job. I understand that.

For those wanting to see a sample of my work, here are images from a recent shoot. The images are from a home that is over 6,000 sq. ft., seven bedrooms, home theatre, etc. It’s a big home and took quite some time to shoot. Check them out. While all these images utilize HDR, a few are intentionally quite strong in the “application” of HDR to show those agents interested in the more surreal look that I am capable of delivering what it is that you seek or prefer.

As I have previously stated in earlier blog entries, I shot many, many homes while I lived in Virginia. When I moved to Nebraska, I scoured the Plains looking for any and all real estate professionals that would employ me to take photos of the homes they were listing. I went to open houses and introduced myself, made calls to offices, and even sent my propaganda (marketing materials) to various real estate offices.

Not one paying job as a result. I had several agents that said they were interested, but that they couldn’t afford to hire me due to the lower level of business they were generating. That’s a nice way of saying, “I will never use you as I don’t see why I need to pay you to take pictures when I can do it with my little point and shoot camera.”. You can browse back and read more about this and my thoughts on it if you wish. I am moving forward.

I want to make it perfectly clear that I have the ability and desire to shoot homes for agents and homeowners. I don’t just shoot upscale or designer homes. I have shot homes from 1,100 sq. ft. up to 20,000 sq. ft. Of course the fee to photograph a larger home is higher than that of a smaller home, but I shoot each and every home with the same level of commitment and strive to make each home look it’s best.

Until next time,

Mark
