An amazing sky, a buffalo and RIP

I have been falling more in love with my new lens each time I use it. Truly amazing what great glass (a photo lens) does for a shot. I thought the glass I had in my photo bag produced some very sharp images. My new lens leaves me amazed each time I view a capture at 100% in Lightroom or Photoshop.

I was taking a few shots for my daughter of her latest science experiment the other day. Available light was rapidly disappearing as we finished. Couldn’t believe the sky and it’s assorted colors. I stood there lost in the beauty. I almost didn’t capture this shot:

Pretty spectacular sky. Winter isn’t usually known for producing such color in the Western sky. I love the silhouette of the tree in the foreground. The sky really shows every branch as it curves and reaches for the heavens. Very often the spur of the moment shots are the ones that take your breath away.

Last Friday I was driving around looking for something to shoot while I waited for my daughter to finish up an after school activity. I hadn’t been to a local lake in quite some time, so I drove in to take a look for a subject. I was driving very slowly checking things out and I saw something that seemed odd near the top of a small hill on the side of the road. I couldn’t figure out what it was, I just knew it was something unusual. Here is what I saw.

As I wrote above, I had no idea what I was seeing. I drove a bit further and here is what I saw:

A buffalo made of assorted iron pieces. The rusted patina is cool looking and really makes the animal take on a worn and weather beaten appearance. The old bull has enjoyed many a pleasurable day, but his time is coming to an end sooner rather than later. Very much like all things. And especially people.

On a sad note, my Uncle Bob died December 26, 2010. He was an intelligent, loving, and brave warrior that accomplished much in his 73 years. This is a picture of him in his NY State Police Troopers uniform. He retired from the Troopers as Deputy Chief Inspector. Quite an accomplishment. He will be missed by many.

Until next time,

Mark
